Whether in the workplace or after hours, exposure to excessive noise without protection can permanently impair your hearing. Noise does not discriminate; anyone and everyone can be vulnerable, and because it is usually painless, damage can often progress unnoticed for years before being discovered. The good news is that noise-induced hearing loss, or NIHL, can also be prevented!
Because noise exposure can happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone, Environmental Health and Safety offers Hearing Conservation and Hearing Protection training to all university employees. Learn how noise impacts your hearing both in and outside the workplace, and how you can protect yourself and your loved ones from permanent hearing loss.
A one-hour training session is available at the EHS office or on-site at your workplace, and includes a brief presentation explaining the effects of noise exposure on hearing as well as a hands-on demonstration of hearing protection devices and their proper care and use. Open discussion throughout the session is encouraged. In addition, EHS can also conduct workplace noise surveys to determine if a noise hazard exists, and if needed, recommend measures to reduce sound levels. Audiometric screening is also provided to employees whose workplace exposures may exceed safe levels. Contact noise@tamu.edu for scheduling individual or group training about various hearing conservation topics.
